Conquering Swim Disparity

Swim disparity within the United States is a national crisis, resulting in increased drowning deaths and disproportionately affecting marginalized groups.

We aim to develop and create a culturally-sensitive approach that can serve as a blueprint to tailor to each group.

U.S. Swim Disparity Statistics

Based on 2019 data from the CDC

37% of Black Adults
Report not knowing how to swim compared to 15% of all adults.
3.5x More AIAN People
American Indian and Alaska Native People (AIAN) are 2.7 times more likely to drown than their white counterparts of the same age (25-29 age group).
28% Increase, Ages 1-4
Children ages 1-4 are the age group with the highest rate of drowning, with a 28% increase between 2019 and 2022.

Goals & Objectives

Swim disparity in the U.S. highlights the unequal access to swimming education and resources among different communities, often affecting minority and low-income groups. This gap leads to increased drowning risks and limits opportunities for water-based activities. Efforts to address this issue focus on promoting water safety, funding swim programs, and creating adaptable solutions for affected areas.

We aim to:

  1. Create or share existing digital materials promoting water safety and bringing awareness to swim disparity
  2. Fund or sponsor swim classes or programs in problem geographic areas
  3. Combine existing methods to create a blueprint to be used across other groups

At a high level, we will achieve these goals by:

  1. Partnering with swim and water-safety related organizations.
  2. Partnering with organizations that cater to the ethnic communities most effected.
  3. Partnering with organizations that cater to the age groups most effected.
  4. Conducting mixed-methods research to determine commonalities across groups, outside of demographic data.
We should be tackling this from so many different angles
that swim disparity doesn’t stand a chance.
